Program Description

Event Details

In two years the longest total solar eclipse in our lifetime will occur in Europe. Paul D. Maley will focus on the August 2027 total solar eclipse that is the longest such eclipse in our lifetime with opportunities to visit a number of places in Europe on one of two cruise ships chartered by the NASA Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society.

You will also be informed of plans to visit Iceland to see the Northern Lights as well as accounts of some of the last 30 aurora adventure successes. He will outline information on exciting space events that can be seen in the Phoenix skies such as rocket launches. You do not need a scientific background to listen to this presentation.

Paul D. Maley lives in Carefree and has been studying night sky phenomena for over 60 years. He has led groups of interested science enthusiasts interested in seeing aurora (Alaska and Norway), comets, meteor showers, eclipses of the Sun, transits of the planets Mercury and Venus to places all over the world. He is the expedition coordinator for the NASA Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society, traveled to 307 international destinations, observed 86 solar eclipses and in 1977 was the first person to suggest that asteroids have satellites in orbit around them  (proven in 1994). He regularly observers eclipses of stars by asteroids throughout Arizona to help map their shapes and sizes.
