Event Details
A Matter of Balance is a FREE eight-week, evidence-based program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. The program enables participants to reduce the fear of falling by learning to view falls as controllable, setting goals for increasing activity levels, making small changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercises to increase strength and balance. Each student will receive a Matter of Balance manual to support weekly class learning and at home practice.
Participants will also learn about the importance of exercise in preventing falls and practice exercises to improve strength, coordination, and balance. Participants also conduct a home safety evaluation and learn how to get up and down safely.
Additional topics include home safety, assertiveness, developing positive strategies for change, reducing barriers to exercise, identifying physical risk factors for falls, personal action planners, recognizing misconceptions about falls, and moving from self-defeating to self-motivating thoughts.
Please note that the first two sessions will be "classroom" style learning, with light exercises beginning during Session Three.
This program is limited to 18 participants.
